Lightroom is the most used, but it is not the best at everything (neither is any of the others). It is worth investigating a bit to see which one suits you best. There are more options still: DxO Optics, Corel AfterShot, Photo Ninja. I'm just one of those who dislike its user interface, and my tool of choice is CaptureOne 8 Pro.

That, plus the lack of a catalog function, drove me to other software.Īs JDM said, most people here will vote for Lightroom, and it is a seriously good piece of software. I've been a happy ViewNX2/CaptureNX2 user for years, but for me the main point was CaptureNX2 - which is completely abandoned. View NX2 does still get some updates, but effectively it is a dead end street.

  • Nikon is abandoning ViewNX2 in favor of the pair "View NX-i / Capture NX-D".
  • Many issues you'll find reported on the web are more due to Capture NX2, in my experience.

The problematic one (for many) was Capture NX2, which was not a free piece of software, much more competent though, but also much more touchy. It has its clear limits, as Lex pointed out, but on most PCs and Macs it did seem to work quite alright.

  • ViewNX2 was not that much of a buggy program (relatively speaking anyway).
  • At times ViewNX 2 locks up in my PCs and I have to uninstall and reinstall it to get it working again.
  • It's occasionally and inexplicably glitchy.

D-Lighting is handy in the camera, but can't match Lightroom for accomplishing the same effects. Sharpening is hamfisted, emphasizing noise and producing halos even at the lower settings.

It cannot match Lightroom for subtle rendering of highlights.

Very handy on odd occasions when tags, keywords and other stuff fail to link to both the JPEGs and NEFs via Windows Explorer, Lightroom and other photo viewers.

Only Nikon's own software can read these meta data changes.

But it does store some meta data in the NEF rather than only as a sidecar file. It doesn't alter the raw file in a way that changes the image permanently.

  • Nikon's own software writes some meta data to the NEF raw files.
  • (Jeffrey's online EXIF viewer can read a lot of meta data, but it can't convert it to plain language tags that are easily understood - such as whether the photo was shot using Nikon's Vivid, Portrait, Landscape or other in-camera JPEG settings.) Lightroom doesn't display some meta data that ViewNX 2 can, such as the specific in-camera JPEG settings used. But you can use ViewNX 2 to create the same look, if you happen to like it, and save to 100% quality or TIFF to ensure maximum quality. This can occasionally result in some posterizing in blue skies. For example, Nikon's in-camera JPEGs save at what appears to be equivalent to 85% quality.
  • Only ViewNX 2 can duplicate Nikon's in-camera JPEG looks, and it does it better than the camera itself.
  • However I still keep ViewNX 2 handy for what it does well: It also interfaces nicely with editing software from Nik, DxO, Perfect Effects, Photomatix and many others. I'd suggest Lightroom as an all purpose viewer, organizer and editor. ViewNX 2 is good for only a few chores, and is very weak as a photo editor.
